Eighty plates are called for with two plates lacking. Both volumes are quite good with sound bindings, some wear to the cloth at the spine ends, with a short degree of cracking to the joint on volume one. The papered boards and cloth spines are rubbed marked and stained.Occasional browning and spotting to some plates otherwise inside fairly clean throughout. One plate is partially loose with fraying and darkening to the proud edge, another plate has a little running to the colouring. Overall quite a good set of this early book on the customs and culture of China, with its exquisite hand coloured illustrations.

The stipple-and-line engravings for the most part show costumes of various professions in China. They show military, ceremonial and traditional costumes, weaponry, means of transport, arts and crafts, implements, toys and other objects of everyday life, as well as scenes of punishments and executions. The majority of the plates were based on original drawings in the private collection of the French Secretary of State Henri Léonard Jean Baptiste Bertin (1719-1792) who was in charge of the French East India Company. The first French edition was published in 1811-12. A nice, clean copy.
