[10], 198, [17] pp. Sympathetic respine over original brown calf with a red title label and gilt lettering and ruling. With engraved frontis a folding map of Roman Britain at p.48. Leaves with water staining towards fore-edge and some offsetting to text throughout. With a bookplate to the front pastedown belonging to 'Julius Bertram', and an ink inscription to the title dated 'Lewis Morris. 1762'. Also a small red Henry Sotheran bookseller's sticker to the foot of the front pastedown. 'The Description of Britain' is an 18th century literature forgery purporting to be a medieval historical account which had significant influence upon revised histories of Roman Britain after it's publication. It was published by Bertram as the work of Richard of Cirencester - a 14th Century monk - and not discovered to be forged until 1867. Scarce edition, published in Copenhagen, where Bertram was an expatriate. Small 8vo.
