Am Schluß befinden sich 13. gefaltete Kupfertafeln, davon 10 aus A. F. Kollars Analecta monumentorum omnis aevi Vindobonensia /Wien, Trattner, 1761). Titeleblatt mit zwei hinterlegten Eckabrissen (ohne Textberührung), eine Karte mit hinterlegten Läsuren. Teilweise stockfleckig und gebräunt. Ecken/Kanten bestossen, etwas berieben, Deckeln leicht gewölbt, für das Alter sehr schön und ordentlich erhalten. Vorwort von Gottfried Bessel, dem Abt von Stift Göttweig und Auftraggebers der Chronik Hahn: Franz Josef von H., Weihbischof zu Bamberg, geb. zu Würzburg am 13. Juli 1699, war ein Sohn des fürstbischöflichen Lehenprobstes Philipp v. H. Während seiner Studienzeit zu Würzburg schloß er sich eng an den verdienstvollen Forscher Schannat an, der den jungen eifrigen Geschichtsfreund dem Mölker Benedictiner Hieronymus Petz empfahl. Von Petz erhielt er in Diplomatik und Paläographie treffliche Unterweisung; dann begab er sich nach Göttweig, wo ihm Abt Bessel Auftrag gab, eine Geschichte des Klosters zu schreiben. Doch der reiche Urkundenschatz, den ihm theils das Kloster selbst darbot, theils Bessels Vermittlung aus andren Abteien verschaffte, weckte in H. den Gedanken, über Charakter und Werth dieser ältesten schriftlichen Denkmale selbst helleres Licht zu verbreiten. Somit ist durch den ersten, von ihm bearbeiteten Band des Chronicon Gottwicense zwar nicht die Geschichte des Klosters erläutert, wol aber das Diplomenwesen des Mittelalters, und zugleich zum ersten Mal der Versuch gewagt, in die mittelalterliche Geographie Deutschlands, wo bis dahin nur die vagsten und verworrensten Begriffe sich breit machten, Klarheit zu bringen. Das Chronicon, 1732 zu Tegernsee gedruckt, trägt nicht Hahns, sondern Bessels Namen; es unterliegt aber, wie aus den von Schneidawind mitgetheilten Beweisen erhellt, keinem Zweifel, daß H. der eigentliche Verfasser des Werkes, dessen Bedeutung für die Diplomatik von Gatterer Mabillons Acta sanctorum ordinis St. Benedictini gleichgestellt wird. Nach Göttweih kam auf seinen Reisen nach Wien häufig Friedrich Karl Graf von Schönborn, Reichsvicekanzler und Kaiser Karls VI. vertrauter Freund. Dieser machte 1728 den jungen Priester zu seinem geheimen Secretär, und nachdem er bald darauf die Regierung der Fürstbisthümer Bamberg und Würzburg angetreten hatte, zum geistlichen Rath und Canonicus des Stifts Haug zu Würzburg und des Collegiatstifts St. Gangolf zu Bamberg. 1732 wurde H., der sich der Freundschaft und des Vertrauens seines Fürsten in hohem Maße erfreute, zum wirklichen geheimen Rath, 1734 zum Weihbischof und Vicarius generalis in Spiritualibus ernannt und ihm außer anderen reichen Einkünften auch die Pfarrei St. Martin zu Bamberg überlassen. Am 19. September 1734 fand unter prächtigen Festlichkeiten die Bischofsweihe statt, worüber in dem im Bamberger Archiv verwahrten Hofdiarium ausführliche Schilderung geboten ist. Auch eine überaus große Anzahl von Originalreferaten Hahns findet sich in diesem Archiv; die verschiedensten Fragen weltlicher und geistlicher Natur erörternd, lassen sie H. als streng kirchlich gesinnten, aber toleranten und milden Priester, tüchtigen Gelehrten und eifrigen Freund wissenschaftlicher Studien erscheinen. Ein neues Feld ersprießlicher Thätigkeit ward ihm eröffnet, als er bei Erweiterung der Bamberger Akademie zu einer wirklichen Universität 1741 zum Conservator gewählt wurde. Als solcher hatte er die Oberaufsicht über Professoren und Studirende, und bei den fortwährenden Streitigkeiten zwischen den Professoren geistlichen und weltlichen Standes, die im Allgemeinen im Widerstreit der alten scholastischen Lehrprincipien mit der Forderung wahrer Wissenschaftlichkeit wurzelten, fand er häufig Gelegenheit, für die Freiheit der Forschung als Vertheidiger aufzutreten. Er unterhielt mit den bedeutendsten Gelehrten nicht blos Deutschlands, sondern fast aller europäischen Staaten lebhaften Briefwechsel, wozu insbesondere die von ihm angelegte Münzen- und Antikensammlung Anregung gab. Sie wird von Oberthür als eine der größten und schönsten gerühmt, die Franken je besaß. H. selbst schätzt sie in seinem Testamente auf 60,000 Gulden; nach seinem Tode kam sie unter den Hammer, der größte Theil wurde für das kurfürstliche Cabinet zu Mannheim erworben. Ebenso werthvoll soll seine Bibliothek und Handschriftensammlung gewesen sein, die von den Brüdern Veit zu Augsburg erworben wurden. H. widmete sich jedoch nicht ausschließlich dieser Sammelarbeit und gelehrten Thätigkeit; als Rathgeber des Fürstbischofs Friedrich Karl, der als Freund Karls VI. und seiner Tochter Maria Theresia eine wichtige politische Rolle spielte und insbesondere während des österreichischen Erbfolgekriegs die Verhandlungen zwischen Baiern und Oesterreich leitete, konnte er bedeutsamen Einfluß auf die Politik der fränkischen Hochstifte und sogar des habsburgischen Erzhauses ausüben. Als aber 1746 Friedrich Karl starb, war mit ihm das Ansehen, ja auch die Ruhe seines Freundes zu Grabe getragen. Der Benediktiner Gottfried Bessel (1672-1749) hatte insgesamt drei Bände zur Geschichte des von ihm geleiteten Klosters Göttweig geplant, an der der Geistliche Franz Josef von Hahn mitarbeitete. Das eigentliche Hauptwerk sollte mit dem zweiten Band begonnen werden, das sich dann explizit mit der Geschichte des Stiftes Göttweig auseinandersetzen sollte. Im letztlich einzig publizierten ersten Band des "Chronicon Gotwicense" hielt Bessel sich sehr eng an Jean Mabillons "De re diplomatica libri VI".
