He served Henry for nearly 40 years and was instrumental in French fiscal and military policy. His memoirs offer a contemporary view of the French court and history of this turbulent period of unrest and strife. Vol. 1 of the memoirs was printed by Bethune before his death in 1641. Vol. 2 was printed posthumously in Paris in 1662.
