Top edge (of the closed pages covered in) gilt. Complete with 60 hand-colored ornithological plants. The text is slightly to moderately foxed, and there are a few small tears and chips to several page edges. While some plates are pristine, most of the plates have at least one or two spots of foxing in the image area, and some have a half dozen or in several cases more. With sixty impressive and fine lithographic colour plates, all finished by hand. Title-page foxed. Very occasional and light marginal spotting throughout the text. Plates bright and fresh, vivid colours with minimal spotting only to margins of some illustration. Bound in later red Russia half leather and buckram over plywood boards with bevelled edges, spine in compartments with five raised bands, blind-tooled floral centrepieces, gilt-stamped name of author and black morocco label with gilt title. Only some minor rubbing around lower outer corners and cover edges. An excellent copy.

Cloth. Condition: Good Minus. No Jacket. Fourth Edition. With sixty large paltes coloured by hand. Hinges cracked, particularly to volume two which is a little shaken. Extremities rubbed. Unfortunately, the rear boards and also the spine of vol 2 are extensively dampstained, affecting the colour of the cloth. Closed edges are untrimmed and lightly chipped. Small owner name to front endpapers, otherwise, apart from some light foxing throughout, contents are clean and tidy, all plates are present and in very good condition, beautifully hand painted.
