This book tells the story of the many faces of Gendron's unusual 135-year company history. It is dedicated to the company's founder French Canadian Pierre Gendron. Named "The Pioneer," he was a creative genius, an inventor, mechanic, and considered a great Toledo industrialist. This book reveals the story of Gendron's life, the company's history, and some of the reasons why the company has been successful for so many years. Included are sections on carriages, velocipedes, bicycles, and press-steel toys with a special emphasis on pedal cars. 4to. 11-3/16" x 8-9/16". Glossy color pictorial boards. 206 pp.

Condition: Very Good. Cheb, Czechoslovakia: Es-Ka Bicycles, [ca. 1920]. Ephemeral poster stamp (13cm). Single thin sheet with shorn top edge; some toning to front and foxing to rear. Very Good or better. First called Elite, Es-Ka Bicycles was founded in Cheb, Czechoslovakia in 1911 by Ambros Swetlik and Heinrich Kastrup. Located in the far west of the country near the German border, Cheb was the center of a German-speaking region called Egerland. Though Es-Ka established Cheb a hub for bicycle manufacturing in the early twentieth century, the company halted production in 1941 when the city was seized by the German army. Cheb's population remained overwhelmingly German until the end of World War II, when Czech resistance groups led a nationwide effort to expel ethnic Germans. The female subject of this advertising label wears traditional Czech folk clothing and poses with a low-slung woman's bike frame.

I don't know how many were signed but this is the first I have seen. In excellent, fine condition in a fine dust jacket. It would make a great gift for the fan in your life, even if that's you. About: Monarch Cycle Manufacturing Company (1892-1899) was a bicycle manufacturer based in Chicago, Illinois. By 1896 the company became one of the largest manufacturers of bicycles in the world. The company was founded in 1892 by John William Kiser.[1] In 1892, the year the company began, there were 35 employees and the company made 150 bicycles. By 1896 there were 1200 Monarch cycle employees, and they were producing 50,000 bicycles. The company sold bicycles worldwide. Monarch Cycle produced a chain-less bicycle with a patented two-piece crankshaft. To promote the company, they sponsored safety bicycle contests for their trick rider Lee Richardson. In 1899 the company was sold to the Bicycle Trust. The American Bicycle Company only lasted a few years (from 1899-1903). Historians have not determined why the company failed but they have several theories. One idea was that the company was poorly organized, and another theory is that the various manufacturers involved in the company had different objectives. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Half-year run bound in early half-leather over pebbled cloth boards. Some edge-wear and bumping to covers; small paper label, painted over, to upper spine. Edges toned, and old library bookplate and marks to front and rear endpapers. Front hinge nearly exposed internally, at endpaper, but still firm. Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat -- a sound and handsome volume, and internally unusually bright and clean. Superb illustrations. Size: Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Book.
