I: Dankt für dessen Brief sammt [!] der angehängten Recension meines Schriftchens": [.] Ihrem schmeichelhaften Antrage, mit Ihnen in geschäftliche Verbindung zu treten, leiste ich um so lieber F…olge, als ich wirklich Ihrem schwierigen und nützlichen Unternehmen meine volle Anerkennung aussprechen kann. Dem praktischen Arzte, der für seine Fortbildung besorgt ist, sind die Schmidt'schen Jahrbücher unentbehrlich geworden [.]" (Br. v. 18. Oktober 1855). II: Als ich vor einigen Tagen Ihnen das Referat über die Hoffmann'sche Dissertation schickte, dachte ich nicht daran, daß ich deßwegen [!] Sie schon heute wieder mit einem Briefe belästigen müsse. Und doch ist es so. Ich fand gestern zufällig in der Zeitschrift für Zoologie von Siebold und Koelliker, daß Ihr geehrte Mitarbeiter Prof. Funke in einer Polemik über die Fettresorption mit Brücke sich befindet und eine Reihe von neuen Gesichtspunkten in den bekannten Streitfragen aufgestellt hat. Da ich Funke's Arbeit nicht kannte, so blieb sie bei meiner kritischen Bemerkung unberücksichtigt und ich bin daher veranlaßt, meine Kritik zu modifici[e]ren, oder ganz zu cassi[e]ren. Ich bitte Sie nun [.] den Ihnen schon bezeichneten Schluß der Recension zu tilgen, oder mir das Ganze zur entsprechenden Abänderung zurückzuschicken [.]" (Br. v. 28. Oktober 1855). Biermer studierte in Würzburg bei Rudolf Virchow, war Assistent am Juliusspital und habilitierte sich 1855 mit der Schrift Die Lehre vom Auswurf für Innere Medizin". 1861 folgte er einem Ruf als Professor für spezielle Pathologie und Vorstand der Medizinischen Klinik nach Bern, 1865 nach Zürich und 1874 nach Breslau. Er beschäftigte sich vorwiegend mit Erkrankungen der Atemwege und beschrieb u. a. die später nach ihm benannte perniziöse Anämie (Biermer-Anämie"). J. A. Winter war als Arzt und Dozent für Augenheilkunde, seit 1850 auch für Ohrenheilkunde, Rezeptierkunde und Geschichte der Medizin in Leipzig tätig, wurde 1853 a.o.Prof. und war von 1859 bis 96 zudem Bibliothekar an der Universitätsbibliothek. Er schrieb u. a. Beiträge zur Geschichte der Entwicklung des Medizinalwesens im Königreich Sachsen" (1893) und war seit 1876 alleiniger Herausgeber von Schmidts Jahrbüchern der in- und ausländischen gesammten Medizin". Jeweils auf Briefpapier mit gepr. Monogramm und mit von fremder Hand stammendem Vermerk zum Verfasser am oberen Blattrand der Recto-Seite; beiliegend die erwähnte Sammlungsbeschreibung.
