For the British Empire the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902 was something of a wake up call, the Boers were unlike any adversary the British had hitherto fought and their style of warfare was similarly "unconventional". Certainly the British were used to taking the f…ight to their enemies but the Afrikaners had other ideas. Their "guerrilla" style tactics became a feature of the conflict as did the great sieges that have gone down in history. The siege of Mafeking and its hero Baden-Powell, is perhaps the one that is most remembered but other towns suffered too- the first one of these, in the very early stages of the war, was the diamond town of Kimberley, an important symbol of British wealth and colonial hopes.
