A generally VG+ clean tightly bound set of early editions with only some light wear and some neat colour touch-ups to some extremities. Volume 1 of this set has a pencil note to verso of front free endpaper to say it was previously purchased at James Bain Booksellers in 1917 for £6. Ex Lbris Oliver Brett (3rd Viscount Esher, who was a British peer and politician) with his fine engraved bookplate to each volume. Charles Lamb (1775 1834) was an English essayist, poet, and antiquarian, best known for his Essays of Elia and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, co-authored with his sister, Mary Lamb (1764 1847). Friends with such literary luminaries as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, William Wordsworth, Dorothy Wordsworth and William Hazlitt, Lamb was at the centre of a major literary circle in England. He has been referred to by E. V. Lucas, his principal biographer, as "the most lovable figure in English literature".

First edition. Nice example of a scarce book from Gall & Inglis, a collection of tales from the Middle Ages retold by Robert Hope Moncrieff (1846-1927), educator and writer from Scotland. OCLC cites 7 holdings. 8vo, x11, 276pp. Frontis and 5 other plates. Publisher's green cloth elaborately decorated and illustrated on front cover and spine in gilt and black, rear cover in blind, beveled edges, g.e. Spine ends bruised, joints and corners rubbed. Few marks to endpapers, frontis toned, ownership signature to title. A very good example.

Full-Leather. Condition: Very Good. Second Corrected and Ammended. xiii; 127 pages. Manuscript annotations to index. Small neat ownership inscription on front endpaper. Attractive contemporary full tan polished calf, gilt floral rolled borders, contrasting dark brown cross bands with lyre and floral wreaths within compartments and lettered in gilt on spine, marbled endpapers.
