Erschien erstmals 1181 bei Stämpfli in Bern. - Samuel Haberstich (1821-1872) machte eine Ausbildung zum Schrieben und war 1838-1846 Kanzlist im Berner Finanzdepartment. Er besuchte philosophische und juristische. Vorlesungen an der Universität Bern und kam in Kontakt mit den Radikalen um Jakob Stämpfli. Ab 1846 arbeitete er unter dem Pseudonym Arthur Bitter als freier Schriftsteller und Journalist, war Redaktor des politisch-satirischen Wochenblatts "Gukkasten" und Gründer des Nachfolgeblatts "Schweiz. Charivari". 1851 wurde er wegen politischen Satiren aus dem Kanton Bern ausgewiesen und lebte danach in Solothurn, Murten und Zürich, bis er 1856 in den Kanton Bern zurückkehrte. Erste Ausgabe. - Samuel Haberstich (1821-1872) schrieb unter dem Pseudonym Arthur Bitter für mehrere politische Blätter und vertrat eine radikal-liberaler Position. Er verstand sich als Gegenstück zu Gotthelf, benutzte aber schamlos dessen Sprache und Erzähltechnik. Der sonst um keinen Streit verlegene Grossschriftsteller reagierte auf das Erscheinen des Büchleins erstaunlich gelassen. Er antwortete auf einen Brief seines Verlegers Springer aus Berlin, der ihn darauf aufmerksam machte, mit dem Hinweis, dass zu einem Protest kein Anlass bestünde, da Haberstich "ein verganteter Schreiber und schlecht Subjekt" nicht mit ihm zu verwechseln wäre.
