Die Protagonisten dieses grandios entwickelten kulturellen und geistigen Lebens kamen aus allen möglichen Gegenden der Welt, aus den unterschiedlichsten Communities. Ihre soziale, religiöse, kulturelle und politische Vielfallt prägte das Bild Berlins. Zumindest die eine, die glänzende, "goldene" Seite. Die andere, grauere und elendere war in den Mietskasernen der Arbeiterviertel zu Hause; Milieus, die Künstler wie Heinrich Zille oder Käthe Kollwitz so trefflich mit Humor und Bitterkeit eingefangen haben. Mit dem Machtantritt der Nationalsozialisten 1933 wurde nach und nach Gesetz, was der SA-Straßenterror in den letzten Jahren der Weimarer Republik bereits an gekündigt hatte: Die Verdrängung samt lieh er kultureller, politischer und wirtschaftlicher Kräfte, die nicht dem braunen Ungeist entsprachen. Auf das Ende der Demokratie folgte die Zerstörung der kulturellen und urbanen Vielfalt Berlins. Eine erschütternd große Zahl von Künstlern, Schriftstellern, Komponisten, Theaterleuten, aber auch Ärzten, Anwälten und Lehrern, die Anfang deri93oer-Jahre das vielfarbige Leben Berlins geprägt hatten, fielen der Ausgrenzung und Verfolgung zum Opfer, erfolgreiche Karrieren wurden gewaltsam beendet, hoffnungsvolle Talente konnten sich nicht mehr entfalten. An die Stelle einer bunten, international beeinflussten Kultur trat nun die braune, "völkische" Gleichschaltung. Was danach folgte ist bekannt. Erst brannten Bücher, später Synagogen, dann ganz Europa. Am Ende der 12jährigen Nazibarbarei gab es sechs Millionen ermordete europäische Juden und über60 Millionen Kriegstote. Erklärtes Ziel der Nazis war es, jene Menschen, die ausgegrenzt, vertrieben oder ermordet wurden, auch dem kollektiven Gedächtnis zu entreißen, die Erinnerung an sie auszulöschen. Bei Berühmtheiten wie Albert Einstein, Anna Seghers, Kurt Tucholsky oder Bertolt Brecht ist ihnen das nicht gelungen. Die meisten aber - Musiker, Fotografen, Kabarettisten, Sänger, Tänzer, Filmschauspieler, Maler, Kunsthandwerker, Wissenschaftler, Dichter, Theaterleute und Zirkusartisten - sind heute weitgehend unbekannt. Ihr Leben und ihr Vermächtnis aus den Archiven in den Stadtraum und so in das öffentliche Bewusstsein zurück zu holen, heißt ihnen und unserer Erinnerung an diese Menschen ein Gesicht zu geben.
