Robert Blatchford (1851-1943) is best known for his work as a socialist campaigner and activist for the Labour Movement. In 1891 he founded The Clarion newspaper which would later publish a series his of articles on socialism; in 1893 the articles were reissued in book form as Merrie England. Merrie England went on to sell over two million copies in Britain and America and was translated into six languages. The Manchester Guardian said that "For every convert [to socialism] made by Das Kapital, there would be a hundred made by Merrie England." Tommy Atkins has been described as a "realistic, and Kiplingesque story of life in the ranks.".

Add to basketAn extensive archive of the personal, literary, and political activities of the Blatchford family from the mid-19th to the late 20th centuries. Robert Blatchford (1851-1943) emerged from a brush-maker's apprenticeship in Halifax to become a highly influential socialist campaigner, journalist, and author. Philip Snowden, Labour's first Chancellor of the Exchequer, wrote of Blatchford's pre-war campaigning that "No man did more than he to make Socialism understood by the working man" (p. 58). In 1890, Blatchford helped found the Clarion, a weekly socialist newspaper: in 1893, a series of articles were reprinted as Merrie England, a primer on socialism. The Manchester Guardian famously wrote that "for every British convert made by Das Kapital there were a hundred made by Merrie England" (quoted in Thompson, p. 101). Although Blatchford disliked party politics, he founded the Manchester branches of both the Fabian Society and the Independent Labour Party and maintained close friendships with many prominent Labour politicians. In addition to his political campaigning, Blatchford was a prominent atheist, vegetarian, and opponent of eugenics. This archive illustrates the familial life of Robert Blatchford and his children. It reveals the extent to which Blatchford's devoted family circle provided a balance to the intense pressures of his professional life. Blatchford married Sarah Crossley, whom he had met during his ill-fated apprenticeship, in 1880. The couple had one surviving son (Corrie) and two daughters (Winifred and Dorothea). The Blatchford sisters inherited their father's political awareness: the archive includes an original, unpublished typescript by Winifred exploring the particular character of England, with a focus on the lives of English women. Highlights are listed below - a full inventory is available on request. a) Merrie England. London: The Clarion Press, 1908. A specially bound presentation copy, signed by 24 leading members of the pre-war socialist movement. The full red morocco binding is by Birdsall of Northampton, and gilt lettering on the front cover reads "To Robert Blatchford/ From a Few Old Friends,/ A Tribute". Among the old friends to sign the front free endpapers are Sir James Sexton (1856-1938), a founder-member of the Independent Labour Party, Philip Snowden, 1st Viscount Snowden (1864-1937), first Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer, and James Middleton (1878-1962), General Secretary of the Labour Party. b) Seven inscribed presentation copies of Robert Blatchford's novels, including: -- The Nunquam Papers. London: 68, Fleet Street; E. Hulton & Co., Manchester, 1891. Blatchford's first book, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Dolly Blatchford/ from her father/ Robert Blatchford". -- Britain for the British. London: Clarion Press, 1902. First edition, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "The First Copy Printed/ to Mrs Blatchford/ with love from/ Her Respectful Husband/ Robert Blatchford/ March 19, 1902". Blatchford's socialist treatise has been listed among his "outstanding" literary works (ODNB). c) The 29 photographs capturing Robert Blatchford's life from reluctant schoolboy to veteran campaigner. d) The TLS from Herbert Morrison, on 11 Downing Street paper, presenting a series of photographs to the Blatchford sisters. e) Winifred Blatchford's original, unpublished typescript, with a preface supplied by Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham (1852-1926), the first socialist MP and the first president of the Scottish National Party. Provenance: Christine Glanville (1924-1999), Robert Blatchford's grandniece. Glanville designed and puppeteered many of the marionettes used for the television series of Gerry Anderson - most famously Thunderbirds. Philip Snowden, An Autobiography. Volume One. 1864-1919, 1934; Laurence Thompson, Robert Blatchford: Portrait of an Englishman, 1951.
