Paperback. Condition: Very Good. When insulin was discovered in the early 1920s, even jaded professionals marveled at how it brought starved, sometimes comatose diabetics back to life. In this now-classic study, Michael Bliss unearths a wealth of material, ranging from scientists unpublished memoirs to the confidential appraisals of insulin by members of the Nobel Committee. He also resolves a longstanding controversy dating to the awarding of the Nobel to F. G. Banting and J. J. R. Macleod for their work on insulin: because each insisted on sharing the credit with an additional associate, medical opinion was intensely divided over the allotment of credit for the discovery. Bliss also offers a wealth of new detail on such subjects as the treatment of diabetes before insulin and the life-and-death struggle to manufacture it.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. This diachronic study brings clipping processes, blending, and suffix reinterpretation together in support of the argument that all word formation must be systematic. These three processes are all part of morphology as they deal with word formation; the notion of morpheme, however, does not play any role in these changes. This may be the reason why these three processes of word formation have been dismissed as accidental phenomena, undeserving of further analysis. In this book, Camiel Hamans uses examples from English and Dutch morphology and targets specialists in morphology and historical linguistics. The underlying assumption of Hamans' research is that word-formation processes are systematic, not random or haphazard, based on the rationale that, if language changes were haphazard, interlocutors would see their chances of properly understanding each other heavily diminished. It is highly unlikely that word formation consists of two completely different parts: a morphemic one which is systematic and a non-morphemic one which is not. The results presented in this volume show that non-morphemic processes of word formation are not all chaotic. Tim Healey; Charles Lockhart (illustrator).…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. William Osler, who was a brilliant, innovative teacher and a scholar of the natural history of disease, revolutionized the art of practicing medicine at the bedside of his patients. He was idolized by two generations of medical students and practitioners for whom he came to personify the ideal doctor. But much more than a physician, Osler was a fiercely intelligent humanist. In both his writings and his personal life--and through the prism of the tragedy of the Great War--he embodied the art of living. Indeed, this is a book not only about the evolution of modern medicine, the training of doctors, holism in medical thought, and the doctor-patient relationship, but also about humanism, Victorianism, the Great War, and much else. Meticulously researched and accessibly written, William Osler: A Life in Medicine brings to life both a fascinating man and the formative age of twentieth-century medicine.…
