This book denotes the early history of Engolismensis, a province of western France and its relationship with the kings of England and France from the beginning of the eleventh century to the end of the twelfth century. The province was a site of regional contest between the counts of Engolismensis and the more powerful counts of Poitou and Dukes of Aquitaine. The county was wedged between the French and English realms, and it was contested because of its wealth and strategic position along the path from the French north to the Aquitanian south. The author argues that the county was contested not simply for its geography, but because the rich and powerful families of the region exploited the rivalry between the English and French, playing the two powers against each other in order to maintain their independence. The book examines the complex interplay of regional, dynastic, and royal power in western France, arguing that the county of Engolismensis only fell under English control in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries because of the fortuitous marriage between the heiress to the county and King John of England. This study will be of great value to anyone interested in the history of the region or the broader political and military history of western Europe in the central Middle Ages. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
