"Ueber die Krankheiten Japans liegen mit Ausnahme der Kak-ke (Beri-beri) bisher nur wenige Veröffentlichungen vor. Einige ältere Notizen finden sich in Lombard's Traité de climatologie médicale (Tome IV, p.224 ff.) zusammengestellt. Neuerdings haben namentlich Wernich, Bälz und Remy (Arch géneral. de méd. Mai et août 1883) diesen Gegenstand behandelt. Die Arbeit des Letzteren, welcher sich nur kurze Zeit in Japan aufgehalten hat, ist in der Hauptsache eine Compilation fremder, zum Theil aus mündlichen Mittheilungen geschöpfter Beobachtungen. Bälz's Aufsätze beziehen sich auf ein beschränktes Gebiet, einen Theil der Infections- und parasitären Krankheiten. Am ausführlichsten hat sich Wernich, namentlich in seinen Geographisch-medicinischen Studien etc., mit den Krankheiten Japans beschäftigt. Aber gerade seine Mittheilungen bedürfen vielfach der Berichtigung und Erweiterung, was zum Theil darin seinen Grund haben mag, dass das Krankenmaterial, welches ihm während seiner 16monatlichen Thätigkeit in Tokio zu Gebote stand, ein verhältnissmässig kleines war. Auf nachfolgenden Blättern will ich eine kurze Zusammenstellung meiner eignen Beobachtungen geben, zu welchen mir durch eine 4jährige Wirksamkeit als Director des Gouvernementshospitals und der mit diesem in Verbindung stehenden Poliklinik in Kioto Gelegenheit geboten wurde. Dieselben betreffen also zunächst Kioto und seine Umgebung.
