Un vol. au format in-8 (222 x 138 mm) de 1 frontispice lithographié n.fol., xxiv - 384 pp. Reliure d'édition de plein cartonnage taupe, filet gras et maigres à froid encadrant les plats, lesquels s'agrémentent en outre d'une large composition figurative dorée et polychrome, dos lisse orné d'un riche ''décor parlant'' comportant de larges fleurons figuratifs dorés avec rehauts en couleurs, titre doré, tranches dorées. Exemplaire revêtu d'un élégant cartonnage éditeur avec incrustations de teintes marine, cerise et verte. Il s'agrémente de 20 (sur 20) jolies planches lithographiées sur fond jaune à l'imitation du papier de Chine d'après les dessins de Frédéric Bouchot ; dont la présente contribution n'est pas sans rappeler les illustrations zoomorphes de Grandville. Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian est particulièrement connu en tant que fabuliste, ses fables étant unanimement considérées comme les meilleures après celles de Jean de la Fontaine, construites avec élégance et solidité à la fois. Les morales de certains de ses apologues sont encore citées couramment, comme «Pour vivre heureux, vivons cachés» (Le Grillon), «Chacun son métier, les vaches seront bien gardées» (Le Vacher et le Garde-chasse) ou «L'asile le plus sûr est le sein d'une mère» (La Mère, l'Enfant et les Sarigues). Quant aux expressions «éclairer sa lanterne» ou «rira bien qui rira le dernier», elles sont tirées respectivement des fables Le Singe qui montre la lanterne magique et Les deux Paysans et le Nuage. Fonds anciens de littérature pour la jeunesse, 332 - Osterwalder I, Dictionnaire des illustrateurs, p. 157 - Bénézit II, Dictionnaire des peintres, p. 214. Discrète perte de coloration affectant chacun des plats. Quelques discrètes rousseurs dans le texte. Infime manque en marge d'un feuillet. Les derniers présentent une irisation marginale, sans atteinte au texte. Du reste, ensemble en belle condition.
