Such was Boulanger's popularity with the French working classes in the late 1880s that it was believed that he could make himself dictator. Stylish and dynamic signature ('Genl: Boulanger'), on back of 9.5 x 6.5 cm calling card. In good condition,… lightly aged. The words 'Général Boulanger' are printed in large letters on the front of the card, and nothing else. From the autograph album of the novelist George Meredith's daughter Marie Eveleen (Mariette; 1871-1933), later the wife of Henry Parkman Sturgis (1847-1929), American-born banker and Liberal politician. Probably acquired after Boulanger's flight to London in 1889. See image. Note: Extracted from an Album of Autograph Letters created by Meredith's daughter which included letters to George Meredith from distinguished fellow-writers (as here) such as Henry James, George Eliot but also from people of distinction (such as Wellington and Clemenceau) to other correspondents.

Add to basketUndated. General Georges Ernest Jean Marie Boulanger (1837-91) served in Italy, China, the Franco-Prussian War, and against the Commune. He commanded the army of occupation in Tunis (1884-85). He was Minister of War 1886-87, but was arrested for disobeying orders. Boulanger was called the 'Man on Horseback' because he often appe…ared mounted before the Paris crowds. His radical reforms, known as Boulangism and supported by leading Bonapartist and anti-German conspirators for their own ends, eventually rebounded on him. The government prosecuted Boulanger, who fled to Brussels and later shot himself.

At the start of 1889 it had seemed likely that he would exploit his tremendous working-class support to become dictator, but by April a warrant had been issued for his arrest and he had fled first to Brussels and then to London, before setting in Victor Hugo style in J…ersey. He would return to Brussels in 1891, to shoot himself dead at the grave of his recently-deceased mistress. Complete 12 x 9.5 cm white envelope. In fair condition, lightly aged, and with back flap torn. All in Boulanger's hand, with his underlined signature at bottom left, the writing on the front cover of the envelope reads: 'Demande d'autorisation. / à Son Excellence / Monsieur le Gouverneur. / Saint-Hélier. / Ile de Jersey. / Genl. Boulanger.' Beneath the top line, in pencil: 'for Elizabeth Castle.-' On the reverse, in a contemporary hand, in ink: 'Autograph Letter & Envelope of Genl. Boulanger / 18 Nor. 1889'. The letter is not present.

Red pebbled cloth, title in gilt on spine. Red speckled edges. Solid text block, sunned spine, bumped corners, faint foxing throughout. Endpapers are foxed with… light transference. The first volume only, featuring an inscription from Boulanger on the half title. Inscription reads: "Monsieur Balfour / membre de parlement / cordial souvenir / Gnl Boulanger." General Georges Ernest Jean-Marie Boulanger (1837-1891) was a charismatic leader who rose rapidly in the ranks of the French Army, eventually becoming Minister of War in 1886. The general attracted public admiration for his reformist stance and his tough posture on foreign policy, especially against Germany, with the French citizenry calling him Général Revanche or "General Revenge." The Parliamentary Republic feared a coup by Boulanger and a return to authoritarian rule. However, his political movement collapsed after he fled the country to evade arrest, and his subsequent return to France ended in tragedy when he committed suicide at the grave of his mistress in 1891, marking the abrupt end of his political aspirations. Arthur James Balfour, 1st Earl of Balfour (1848-1930) served as British Prime Minister from 1902 to 1905. He later served as British Foreign Secretary during World War I, where he issued the Balfour Declaration, supporting the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people in Palestine.". Signed first edition of L'Invasion Allemande by Général Georges Ernest Boulanger, inscribed to the future Prime Minister of Great Britain, Arthur Balfour. (illustrator). Signed.
