Fine 19th century calf, gilt title on spine. The above latin translation of Boyle's first scientific work, published 1660 title The Spring and Weight of the Air quickly established a wide reputation for the author. In this work Boyle proved the air had weight and that by virtue of this it became compressed near the earth to an extent that enabled it to support a column of 29 inches of mercury. Boyle's Law was thus established and carried into posterity i.e. that the volume occupied by a gas is the reciprocal of its pressure.
