Brad Smiley is the great grand nephew of Daniel Knight, a confederate soldier from Amherst County, Virginia. After finding several letters in the family Bible, Smiley became interested in Daniel and his brothers. In 1994, he began his extensive research for The Stone Wall. He followed in Daniel's footsteps, visiting his birthplace, his campsites, and battlefields and captured Daniel's vision, hopes and dreams in a powerful, emotional story. The 19th Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. The 19th Virginia contained men recruited at Charlottesville and in the counties of Albemarle, Nelson, and Amherst. A Civil War Historical Novel about a confederate soldier. The Stone Wall captures the emotions of the people and times. It tells his feelings as he met Robert E. Lee face to face, the sadness he felt when his company escorted the body of "Stonewall" Jackson, and his pride and fear when he learns his regiment, the 19th Virginia Infantry will lead Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. The 19th Virginia Infantry fought at First Manassas under General Cocke, then was assigned to General Pickett's, Garnett's, and Hunton's Brigade. The 19th participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from Williamsburg to Gettysburg except when it was with Longstreet at Suffolk. Later it served in North Carolina, returned to Virginia, and was active at Drewry's Bluff and Cold Harbor. Continuing the fight, it was engaged in the Petersburg siege north of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign.
