The author is the wife of a Navy flight instructor, the mother of two young boys, and one of the nation's leading advocates for military families. The daughter of an Admiral, she has been a Navy dependent for nearly thirty years. In 1999, Sarah was a typical bride-to-be, flustered with wedding details. Then the groom called. "I don't want you to panic, but I might not be able to come to our wedding." So began Sarah Smiley's life as a military wife. As a former Navy brat herself, Sarah knew better than anyone that weddings and funerals-even childbirth!-take a backseat to Uncle Sam. But just as the young, nationally syndicated columnist was getting comfortable with the military wife's routine, her husband was sent away for an unexpected deployment. What followed was a test of strength and wit. From getting locked out of the house in pajamas to wrestling with the temptation of infidelity, Sarah exposes it all with candor, heart-and humor.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Seventh printing [stated]. Format is approximately 5.75 inches by 8.75 inches. [4], 354, [2] pages. Map. Illustrations. Glossary. Sources of Information. 19th Virginia Infantry. Inscribed and dated on the title page by the author. Includes Tips on Reserching Genealogy by Barb Smiley. Brad Smiley is the great grand nephew of Daniel Knight, a confederate soldier from Amherst County, Virginia. After finding several letters in the family Bible, Smiley became interested in Daniel and his brothers. In 1994, he began his extensive research for The Stone Wall. He followed in Daniel's footsteps, visiting his birthplace, his campsites, and battlefields and captured Daniel's vision, hopes and dreams in a powerful, emotional story. The 19th Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. The 19th Virginia contained men recruited at Charlottesville and in the counties of Albemarle, Nelson, and Amherst. A Civil War Historical Novel about a confederate soldier. The Stone Wall captures the emotions of the people and times. It tells his feelings as he met Robert E. Lee face to face, the sadness he felt when his company escorted the body of "Stonewall" Jackson, and his pride and fear when he learns his regiment, the 19th Virginia Infantry will lead Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. The 19th Virginia Infantry fought at First Manassas under General Cocke, then was assigned to General Pickett's, Garnett's, and Hunton's Brigade. The 19th participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from Williamsburg to Gettysburg except when it was with Longstreet at Suffolk. Later it served in North Carolina, returned to Virginia, and was active at Drewry's Bluff and Cold Harbor. Continuing the fight, it was engaged in the Petersburg siege north of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign.

"I don't want you to panic, but I might not be able to come to our wedding." So began Sarah Smiley's life as a military wife. Sarah knew better than anyone that weddings and funeralsâ"even childbirth!â"take a backseat to Uncle Sam. But just as the nationally syndicated columnist was getting comfortable with the military wife's routine, her husband was sent away for an unexpected deployment. What followed was a test of strength and wit. From getting locked out of the house in pajamas to wrestling with the temptation of infidelity, Sarah exposes it with candor, heart and humor. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: Smiley, who pens the nationally syndicated column "Shore Duty," is something of an Erma Bombeck for the military-wife set. She wittily and poignantly writes about being a navy spouse left on base with two young children while her husband is on deployment ("the D-word") overseas, just as the impending war in Iraq is dominating the headlines. Raised a navy brat, Smiley is no stranger to military life, but that doesn't preclude the fear, frustration and freak-outs that often accompany her predicament. Fellow military spouses will appreciate Smiley's humorous accounts of attending Spouse Club support meetings, handling household tasks and simply coping with the realities of having a husband thousands of miles away who might not return. Smiley's prose is simple and straightforward, and her humor is clever, often emerging in passages when she's at her lowest. Smiley doesn't express her views about the Iraq war as her personal woes take over.
