First Edition
FIRST EDITION. With lovely text illustrations and large folding colored map. Publisher's cloth, a bit worn on the edges of the spine, and with a small label of the Norfolk & Norwich Library on the front cover and large bookplate of the Library on the front paste-down; minor browning and spotting to preliminary and endleaves only, other wise a very nice copy. First edition of the memoirs of Sir Edward Nicholas Coventry Braddon, KCMG (18291904) following his departure from India (he had previously published Life in India in 1872) where he had been a government magistrate. In 1878 he moved to Tasmania, becoming a member of Parliament in 1879. He later represented Tasmania on the Federal Council, the predecessor to the Constitutional Conventions of the 1890's. He was a member of the first Australian parliament in the House of Representatives (at the age of 72 the oldest member ever elected up to that time). He ultimately became the Premier of Tasmania, a post held from 1894 to 1899. Braddon (1829-1904) was the brother of the famous novelist Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Both the suburb of Braddon in the Australian Capital Territory and the Division of Braddon in Tasmania are named after him.
