Some edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of classic Batsford jacket and spine, 2" split to bottom corner of front jacket, corners slightly bruised, not price clipped (original price 7s 6d,… price on back cover £16.99), some faint grubby fingerprints to unlaminated back jacket, internally clean tight and square, overall a reasonable copy. 116pp, illustrated. A reissue of a truly classic title on the Batsford backlist. First published in 1935, it is a wonderful snapshot of our capital before the Second World War, and a charming insight into our attitudes to urban life back in the Thirties. Our guide Paul Cohen-Portheim offers us his interpretation of life in London through her people, her buildings and her history. Paul Cohen-Portheim (1880-1932), was an Austrian artist and travel writer. He was a proficient linguist and spoke a half a dozen European languages fluently. When World War I broke out, he was painting in Devonshire, and found himself interned for the length of the war. This gave him time to read, observe and meditate, especially on his enforced new home. 'The Spirit of London' was the last thing to be published after his sudden death in 1932. Quite scarce, even in this later reissue. Jacket by Brian Cook (illustrator).

The gilt is still nice and bright and the boards are clean and unfaded - just showing some light marks and rubbing commensurate with age and handling. Some light browning to the edges in places. Head and tail of spine slightly creased, but no serious bumps or creasing. Corners sharp. Top edge of the page block stained blue to match the boards by the publisher - now slightly faded. Fore-edge of page block lightly foxed. There is no reading lean to the binding, and the spine is tight, with no loose pages. Internally also very good with no previous ownership inscriptions. No offsetting or foxing to the endpapers, and very little internal foxing - interior pages clean. No creases or tears. Nice quality paper used. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, with the wraparound illustration by Brian Cook. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 15s. net at the top corner of the front flap. Illustrated throughout with monochrome photographs, and with a beautiful wraparound dustwrapper illustration by Brian Cook. Published in Batsford's notabl…e 'The Face of Britain' series. ***Very good in pale-blue cloth-covered boards with dark-blue titles and rules to the spine and front board. The boards are clean and unfaded - just showing some light marks and rubbing commensurate with age and handling. Some light browning to the edges in places. Head and tail of spine slightly creased, but no serious bumps or creasing. Corners sharp. Top edge of the page block stained blue to match the boards by the publisher - now faded. All page block edges lightly foxed. There is a slight reading lean to the binding, but the spine is tight, with no loose pages. Internally also very good with no previous ownership inscriptions - just a small contemporary bookseller's label at the bottom of the front endpaper. Map endpapers showing North East Lowlands at the front and South Lowlands at the back. Some offsetting and foxing to the endpapers, and particularly to the first few pages. Interior pages clean. No internal creases or tears. Very thick quality paper used, which was much thinner in later post-war printings of the book. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, with the beautiful wraparound illustration by Brian Cook. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 8s. 6d. net at the top corner of the front flap. The dustwrapper is virtually complete, with just some loss at the top of the spine - not affecting the lettering. Some light edge-wear and rubbing to the edges, and a little browning to the spine. No significant tears. Some creasing to the top edges of the large foldover flaps, but no other creasing. ***216mm x 145mm. viii prelim pages plus 120 pages including a four-page Index at the back of the book. ***Contents: Forward, Acknowledgment, Chapter I.
