Good, centre-folded, tanned, sections loose with rust residue and a little loss to the spine fold where the staple has disintegrated, and a couple of ms annotations. RAF Kasfareet (formerly RAF Geneifa) was formed in 1940 on the western shore of the Great Bitter Lake in the Suez Canal Zone. It was a highly strategic base, directly involved in WW2 and the Suez Crisis. Its location close to Sinai made it vulnerable to sandstorms. 107 Maintenance Unit (107 MU) was one of a number of support units formed here, responsible for maintenance, repair, and a flight test centre. Farrell, Ajus & Ghazarian are identifed as accredited representatives of the British Ministry of Supply, with offices in Cairo and Alexandria, here operating under the instructions of the British Military Authorities. Among their Conditions of Sale (p2) is an exclusion to British Forces and Civil Service personnel, and indication that goods are sold without warranty, and duty free (payable by the British Army to the Egyptian Government). The auction was held to sell off 57 Lots (listed pp3-4). These include diverse handtools, spare parts (eg, aircraft tyres and seats, Crossley MT spares), machinery (eg, marine engines, Chevrolet MT engines), equipment (parachutes, parasuits, boots and shoes), scrap (ferrous, photo and radio), etc. The previous owner has indicated interest with marks next to Lots 28 (Planing and Thicknessing Machines (2)) and 29 (Bandsaw and Bandsaw Setter), and neatly deleted 54 (Alloy Fuel Tanks). Some other illustrations have also been hand-colored. this book has gold stamping and tooling to the covers with a couple of minor blemishes and corners slightly bumped otherwise it is in a fine state and very rare to find with all the illustrations and maps in tact, the page edges are marbled. You most likely will never encounter such a fine specimen. The front inside has a bookplate of the Odd Fellows' Library at Sawyers Bar, Siskiyou Co., Calif., handwritten on the front end-paper states Sawyers Bar and lists this book as number 14. No Binding. Condition: Very Good. MAHABAD, IRANIAN KURDISTAN. SHEET J-38 V/NE. FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY. July 1942. Original Second World War military topographical map, approximately 68.4 × 51 cm, scale 1:100,000, equivalent to approximately 0.63 inch to one mile. A rare wartime survey of Mahabad and the surrounding Kurdish districts of north-western Iran, showing roads, tracks, rivers, villages, cultivated land, telegraph lines, mills, wells, springs and the mountainous terrain through contours and spot heights. The sheet bears the reference PID 9003/4701 and is explicitly dated "Edition July 1942." The reliability diagram records pre-1914 Russian survey material, with the principal area revised at 1:100,000 scale in July 1942 and a smaller section revised at quarter-inch to one-mile scale in the same month. Produced during the Allied occupation of Iran, the map is of particular historical interest because Mahabad became only a few years later the capital of the short-lived Republic of Kurdistan in 1946. Institutional research confirms the wider Mahabad military mapping programme, but extensive searches have failed to locate another readily accessible catalogue record for this precise J-38 V/NE July 1942 issue. Original folds and general handling with marginal military or institutional manuscript marks and stamps and a small old adhesive label to the lower left; mapped area complete and highly legible. First and likely only edition of an extremely rare publication from the British intelligence in Baghdad. It was published at a time when resitance in the region against the British authorities was high, after the February 1917 revolution, which caused the Russian forces to depart, and during the Persian Famine of 1917-1919. The work lists, in alphabetical order, different tribes and influential individuals in Western Persia (present day Iran), from Qajar royalty to enemy spies. Each name is followed by a few lines with information about the person or tribe and often mentions whether they are pro- or anti-British. The work offers a wealth of fascinating historical anecdotes and provides a remarkable record of the personalities that attempted to fill the power vacuum created by the departure of Russian forces.The descriptions of the different tribes are quite extensive and usually contain information about their history and chiefs. Most tribes have been marked in blue pencil, possibly by a member of the British authorities in 1918, but this is difficult to ascertain. Some of the individuals mentioned in the work are relatively well-known, like German agents Wilhelm Wassmuss (1880-1931) and Oskar von Niedermayer (1885-1948). Initially they had been regarded as major threats, but their threat level had apparently deceased, as their descriptions are surprisingly short. Also of interest are the entries on the numerous marginal figures that are not otherwise known, including former Foreign Minister Mu'avin ud Daulah (dates of birth and death unknown), who "means well but is quite useless" (p. 66) and Ahad, Mirza (dates unknown) "a merchant of Bijar, a clever man; for us." (p. 5). More detailed entries focus on tribal leaders, Qajar diplomats and powerful merchants. With a stamp at the head of the front wrapper ("SECRET") and several markings in red and blue pencil throughout. The back, spine and edges of the front wrapper have been restored, with most of the original front wrapper preserved. The leaves are slightly browned and occasionally very slightly foxed (mainly pp. 83-86), a short paragraph on page 11 has been replaced by a small strip of paper glued onto the page containing the corrected text. Otherwise in good condition. Restored red printed paper wrappers, with a clear plastic protective wrapper.
