[4], iii, [1], 175, [1] pp. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, worn, joints cracked but holding, the surface leather on the spine largely worn away, chipped at extremities; early ink inscription 'Harmonic Society' to p. 1 and gilt-lettered morocco label to upper board; ink ownership stamp of the musicologist Edgar Hunt (1909-2006) to front pastedown. Some foxing to the title, short tear in the gutter, a few stains and foxmarks in places, the occasional pencil annotation; some page numbers, and the text along the head of p. 64 ('This Catch gained a Prize Medal 1770') cropped. 'This book belonged to the composer Robert Lucas Pearsall of Willsbridge near Bristol and was given by his daughter, Mrs Philippa Swinnerton Hughes [1824-1917] to Hubert Hunt [1865-1945; Pearsall's biographer]. German words in Pearsall's hand have been added to some of the songs together with additions to the music' (ms. pencil note, by Hunt's son, Edgar, to front free endpaper). Pearsall's translations appear on pp. 32 (rota by Jenkins, 'A Boat, a Boat'), 60-1 (Purcell's catch 'Jack thou'rt a Toper Jack' ['Hans bist ein Saufaus!'], with a ms. note of the words loosely inserted), and 79-81 (Webbe's famous glee 'Glorious Apollo').
