Il volume contiene gli atti del seminario, organizzato a Padova il 28 ottobre 2016, sulla quantificazione in architettura, sulla base di… tre parametri: metri cubi, tempi e costi di costruzione. Il metodo, già applicato a edifici di età romana, soprattutto pubblici, è stato ora messo a punto anche per edifici medievali, soprattutto chiese e fortificazioni. Nell'incontro padovano ne sono stati discussi i principali problemi relativamente a computo metrico estimativo, sviluppo reale del cantiere, edilizia pluristratificata. Quando presenti, si sono poi confrontatele fonti scritte con i resti materiali conservati. Sovente approssimative quando sono letterarie e tendono a celebrare il committente, sono più vicine alla realtà se consistono in registri di cantiere e note di spesa che ci permettono di stabilire con un certo dettaglio i ritmi del cantiere in rapporto alle maestranze e ai materiali impiegati. Nel complesso la quantificazione in edilizia rappresenta un contributo importante, ma da mettere in relazione con molteplici altri aspetti, per una ricostruzione socioeconomica delle società del passato. One central theme is the persistent shadow of the ancient cityin crumbling ancient buildings, and the survival of Roman styles of urban lay-out; and in the way that cities were depicted both visually (in iconography that changed only very slowly, if at all), and verbally (in the persistence of often outmoded classical terms and descriptions). Yet the ideal of the city was also changing and developing, especially around the idea of a new, specifically Christian city, protected by its saints and by its churches. - Gian Pietro Brogiolo teaches Medieval Archaeology at the University of Padua. His interests are in the towns and countryside of early medieval Italy, and he has excavated extensively in Lombardy, particularly at Brescia and Monte Barro.
