Bereits 1857 eröffnete er in Bendorf seine eigene Anstalt. "Bei der Behandlung seiner Kranken ging er von dem menschenfreundlichen, damals aber noch wenig Anklang findenden Grundgedanken aus, die äußeren Verhältnisse der Kranken möglichst denen der Gesunden, ihren Gewohnheiten entsprechend, gleichzustellen" (Theodor Kirchhoff). Brosius gehörte so zu den Pionieren der "sanften Psychiatrie", des sog. "familiären Systems", einer Behandlung ohne die bisher übliche brutale Gewalt.
