Add to basketNew York: The Viking Press. 1983. 4to. Original black cloth, lettered in silver to spine and in black to front cover, in photo-illustrated dust-jacket; pp. [7], 8 -128; with black and white photo-illustrations throughout; some creasing to edges of jacket, some staining to half-title; a near-fine copy in very good dustjacket; authorial inscription 'for Frankie - black is beautiful but blue is better love, RM New York '83' in blue ink to half-title. First edition, a presentation copy inscribed by Robert Mapplethorpe, including the essay 'An Eye and Some Body' by Bruce Chatwin.Lisa Lyon, the first World Women's Bodybuilding Champion, first met Robert Mapplethorpe at a party in 1979 where her black rubber outfit caught the photographer's attention. Mapplethorpe was already well known for his explicitly gay and often sadomasochistic portraits, much of it depicting male subjects and was interested in a new project that would counter his reputation for work perceived as provocative and sensational. The resulting photographs, made over a period of two years, enabled Mapplethorpe to continue his exploration of the body and classical beauty while expanding his engagement with the female form and the relationship between photographer and subject. This collaborative edition was dedicated 'To my husband,' by Lyon, and 'To Patti Smith,' by Mapplethorpe. It reproduces many of Mapplethorpe's striking, tender and often amusing portraits of Lyon, displaying his dexterity and sense of humour as a portrait photographer.
