Das wird auch in Filmen und Märchen deutlich, in denen häufig der alte und weise Großvater dargestellt wird, der mit seinem Wissen und seiner Erfahrung den jungen Menschen mit Rat und Tat zur Seite steht.Die Thematik des Alterns beeinflusst das Denken und Handeln eines Menschen. So wird in unserer Gesellschaft häufig gefragt: 'Bist du dafür nicht noch zu jung ' oder: 'Bist du dafür nicht schon zu alt ' Matthias Kliegel hat in seinem Buch 'Psychologische Grundlagen der Gerontologie' verschiedene Altersdefinitionen zusammengetragen. Laut der Literatur der Altersforschung sind Menschen alt, wenn sie das sechzigste Lebensjahr vollendet haben. Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) setzt hingegen die Grenze beim fünfundsechzigsten Lebensjahr an, da dies in den meisten Ländern die Altersgrenze für das Ende der Berufstätigkeit darstellt. Eine weitere Definitionsmöglichkeit besteht in Bezug auf körperliche Leistungsmaxima, wie zum Beispiel der Muskelkraft, Seh- und Hörfähigkeit, oder geistigen Beeinträchtigung. Doch da bei einem gesunden Menschen nicht der Zeitpunkt festgelegt werden kann, wann die vier genannten Leistungsmaxima einsetzen, ist diese Definition meiner Ansicht nach diskutabel.
