Con questo libro gli autori ci invitano alla riscoperta di un gioco di strategia, la Rithmomachia, praticato dal Medioevo al Rinascimento, soprattutto da monaci ed eruditi, poi quasi del tutto dimenticato. Si tratta di una vera e propria battaglia tra cerchi, triangoli e quadrati a cui sono associati certi numeri, disposti su un tavoliere 8x16 che diventa il teatro di singolari scontri di natura aritmetica. L'opera di Codenotti e Resta, entrambi ricercatori presso l'Istituto di Informatica e Telematica del CNR di Pisa, spiega e illustra con immagini le regole del gioco, la strategia e le più istruttive situazioni di gioco. In appendice sono raffigurati tutti i Cerchi, i Triangoli e i Quadrati che compongono il gioco, in modo che possano essere ritagliati ed eventualmente incollati su supporti di cartoncino o altro materiale, per ottenere un set di gioco completo. L'amore per il gioco degli scacchi lo ha portato alla rovina, a causa dell'imbroglio patito da un giocatore spagnolo di nome Cesch. Quando l'allievo gli appare annoiato, Giovanni non resiste alla tentazione di trasmettergli la sua antica e ormai quasi sopita passione. Ne nascono pagine di complicità tra i due, e insospettabilmente anche con la madre di Ludovico, finché il destino non riporta il maestro e Cesch a confronto. Il racconto, ambientato tra la nobiltà del ducato di Milano negli ultimi decenni del sec. XV, fa da sfondo alla transizione dagli scacchi giocati secondo le antiche regole a quelli moderni, in cui la Regina assume un ruolo tutto diverso, figlio di una nuova concezione filosofica. Il lettore si trova così catapultato nell'atmosfera delle sfide scacchistiche del Rinascimento, come la si respirava nelle corti, ma anche nelle taverne dove i "partiti" diventavano uno spunto per scommesse e controversie.
