A commemorative volume in honour of Cesare Beccaria in 3 parts comprising a life and an account of his work with a preface and indexes (pp5 - 206) by the poligraph Amati (1831-1904), an essay opposing the introduction of the new Italian code on capital punishment (pp 213-304) by the jurist Antonio Buccelati (1831-90), who wrote a commentary on the Italian army penal code in 1870, and a financial report (pp 305-382) on the construction of a marble statue of Beccaria sculpted by Giuseppe Grandi (1843-1894) and inaugurated on 19th March 1871 in a square beneath the former hangman's house in Milan which was replaced by a bronze replica in 1914.
