Three Quarter Leather. Condition: Good. Engravings (illustrator). Danish language. Bound in original three-quarter leather and marbled boards; 832 pages (actually, half that, as each page is numbered twice, once for each column). Illustrated throughout with excellent 19th century engravings. Volume 1, number 1, to volume 1, number 52 (the complete year). All edges marbled. University of Wisconsin professor Rasmus B. Anderson's copy, with his signature and date (23 Dec. 1871) to the front pastedown, along with his gift bookplate to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin (1930). The book was later purchased by Norwegian-American collector Herman Gimmestad; he has signed the Historical Society bookplate. The volume shows moderate edgewear and rubbing, with some external wear at the joints, but no splits. Hinges solid; binding square. Leaf 33/34 - 35/36 was torn out at some point; it was subsequently reattached, although backwards, so that the straight fore-edge could be used to reattached the leaf. There is no loss of text, and a proper restoration is quite possible. The text contains a few penciled marginal brackets and notes; these do not obscure the text. A tightly bound, well illustrated volume, with an excellent association. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

The author, a renowned expert in the field, meticulously examines the classification and distribution of these creatures, offering a comprehensive and insightful study of their intricate morphology and behavior. Drawing upon decades of research, the author delves into the complex world of isopods, their anatomical features, and their remarkable ability to roll into a ball for protection. The book goes beyond simple description, offering a detailed examination of their mouth parts, their unique adaptations for survival, and their geographical distribution across the globe. The author's observations reveal patterns in their distribution that point to a former, perhaps interconnected, landmass and offer a glimpse into ancient geological shifts. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the fascinating world of invertebrate life and its connections to broader evolutionary and geographical processes. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
