The book is in good condition. There is minor shelf-wear to the extremities of the cover, the bottom corners of the boards are more heavily rubbed. There is a little minor marking to the boards. The hinges are intact but the binding is quite slack. There is a former owner's name to the top of the ffep. One corner of the fold-out plan is creased. Otherwise the pages are clean and unmarked. The dust jacket is poor with numerous chips, creases and tears (up to 2.7") to the extremities and wear of the back. The jacket has been repaired in a number of places.

First edition in book form (apparently only issued in paperback). The final book by the celebrated 'radical geographer' William Bunge. To quote Bunge himself, this is "one of the most important geographic works ever written, because it is about the most important subject ever addressed." More objectively, perhaps, the Leventhal Map & Education Centre calls it "one of the most famous examples of radical, socially-engaged cartography of the postwar era" ('Bending the Lines' online exhbition). In 1982 Bunge had designed an anti-nuclear proliferation poster, featuring 28 small maps and data-visualizations, ranging from the blast area in Hiroshima to 'Nuclear Weapons Accidents in the United States' and 'Infant Mortality around Reactor'. In 1988 a much expanded version, now featuring 57 maps, found an unlikely published in Blackwell's. This was the culmination of a long and vituperative cartographic career. Bunge first worked as a mathematical cartographer, before becoming immersed in urban human geography, notably in Detroit, where he lived and worked for many years. After Bunge left America, and then Canada, his output slowed, and in fact he worked for a time as a cab driver (in fact a fitting job for someone concerned with the urban geographical experience). While Bunge's influence within geography was great following the Detroit work, it is likely that the 'Nuclear War Atlas' will remain his lasting monument, at least until nuclear non-proliferation becomes more than merely a slogan. Very good condition: very minor wear to cover edges; but by far the best copy we have seen.
