Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Very Good. Autograph letter signed, three pages on a bifolium. 11.2 × 18.4 cm. An important autograph letter from the celebrated Prussian diplomat Baron von Bunsen to the English judge Sir John Taylor Coleridge concerning proposed reform of Prussian divorce law. Bunsen explains that he has received from the King "a very important, but equally difficult enterprise . as to the reform of our divorce law" and seeks Coleridge's advice regarding "the state of that important branch of legislation in England & its actual working." The "King" is almost certainly Frederick William IV of Prussia, of whom Bunsen was a trusted adviser. The letter provides a notable example of nineteenth-century comparative legal enquiry and Anglo-Prussian intellectual exchange. Bunsen also refers to the Archbishop of York, Cambridge, the Grand Commemoration at Oxford, and "our dear friends the Arnolds at Fox How." A historically important legal and diplomatic letter linking one of Europe's leading statesmen with one of England's most distinguished judges. Apparently unrecorded. Folded as posted, with light creasing and minor wear. Very good condition overall.…
