Dritte verbesserte Ausgabe. (vergl. Hermann Blume, u.a.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. One of the most famous satirical works on science and university life from the European Enlightenment, offering a sharp critique of academic culture. Johann Burchard Mencke (16741732), professor of history at the University of Leipzig, originally delivered these two orations in 1713 and 1715. They were first published in 1715 and immediately became an international success. This expanded fifth edition of 1747 demonstrates that the work continued to enjoy widespread readership for decades after Mencke's death. With an engraved frontispiece bearing the motto "Mundus vult decipi" ("The world wants to be deceived").Contemporary full leather binding with a richly gilt spine divided by five raised bands. The pastedowns are browned, and there are scattered wormholes throughout the volume, including the binding. The text is complete, although two pages of the preface have been bound in the wrong order. Octavo edition, in -8, 17 x 11 cm. Severe browning inside, with wormholes also in the decorative binding. Last blank page with severe damages. Not a good copy but complete and with decorative binding. C0795Caillet 7367. One of Mencke's best-known works, this witty and enduring satire ridicules vanity, the pursuit of fame, greed, excessive publishing, and the jealousy of scholars. Modern readers may well think of it as an eighteenth-century version of academic infighting. First published in 1715, it was also translated into Dutch under the title De Quakzalverij der Geleerden ("The Charlatanry of the Learned"). Mencke (16741732) was a German writer, historian, and poet. Given the controversial nature of the book's content, the stated imprint "Amsterdam" was almost certainly used as a fictitious place of publication.[NL]Een van de beroemdste satirische boeken over de wetenschap en de universitaire wereld uit de Europese Verlichting. Academische zelfkritiek.
