Fascinating legal tome, thirteenth edition, 1776, the year of the American War of Independence, Vol IV only covering Popery to Wrecks, with entries including Rape, Riots, Robbery, Servants (P119, IX: "How far the master is allowed to beat his servant: The master is allowed by law with moderation to chastise his servant [but not to beat him to death]"), Tobacco, Treasure, Treason, Witchcraft, Women, etc. each entry with a definition and details of the specific topic. 436pp, + Appendix 38pp, Table of Statutes 24pp, Table of Cases 34pp & Index, 58 pp. Scuffing and rubbing to contemporary calf boards with five raised bands on spine and extremities, one square missing from spine, which is peeling at top & bottom, ffep missing, edges tanned, toning to end papers, pages clean save for some instances of contemporary marginalia, very slight loosening of boards but binding remains firm. Two inch split on each side of spine but boards and binding are still tight. Covers worn and abraded. Volume 2 (1764) is slightly smaller and also in original leather with raised bands to the spine and gilt titles on a leather label. Both volumes have previous owners signatures to front endpapers and Vol 2 has the bookplate of a member of the Inner Temple to front pastedown. . Fascinating insight into 18th century social history. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

A few of the last pages are slightly dog earred but we have attempted to straighten and iron them out. Very interesting to read the details and get into the weeds into these old law cases. Legalese of the era, with a large section on Alehouses, Bastards, Bread, Cattle, Coin, Excise, and much more. Very, very interesting. Written in old print with the "s" looking like an "f". Quite a piece of English History. Good and tight but with rubbing to covers, bump/chipping to tail of spine, and crack at head of back hinge. Text clean and mostly free of foxing but with chewn (?) lower page edges through p. xix, and two former ownership notations/inscriptions on ffep.
