Very-good book in a very-good dust jacket with colorful (uncredited) cover painting depicting Hoppy (drawn to…represent TV's William Boyd) getting the drop on a bad guy, showing several small tears to edges. Jacket REAR panel features a B&W (OK, actually black-and-yellow) photo of actor William Boyd in Hoppy get-up in a similar pose. Not price clipped; jacket front panel shows original price of "6/- net." Not as prized as the 1951 Doubleday of this title, which can fetch $800. L'Amour long denied authorship of this series, in which he tried to stick to the rambunctious, trouble-making character invented by Clarence Mulford. His American editors reportedly heavily rewrote his efforts to match the more clean-cut image projected by the William Boyd TV series. (When the network feared a new-made Western series wouldn't go on TV, Boyd backed the effort out of his own bank account. Then he had an even better idea: What if they sold the kids a lunch box with Hopalong's PICTURE on it . . . with a MATCHING THERMOS inside? Thus are marketing empires born. This book smells a bit musty to us, as do most books arriving here from the British Isles. 192 pp. Reduced from $190.
