Book
Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Reprint. 191 Pages. Yellow boards with moderate stains and wear to edges on both boards. Interior text pages are bright and the text is sharp. This is one of the four Hopalong Cassidy novels written by Louis L'Amour in 1950 under contract with Doubleday. He agreed to write them probably because he had a family to support and his writing career was just getting started. For years he denied he was the author and refused sign them if readers brought them to book signings. When Clarence Mulford died in 1950, he left four unfinished manuscripts. Doubleday hired L'Amour to complete, under the pseudonym of Tex Burns. In 1971-73 Doubleday sold the rights of reprint the Mulford-Cassidy books to Aeonian Press. But when Aeonian started to print the Burns books as well, Doubleday objected and stopped them. Some obviously survived. After his death all four have been published under the L'Amour name. Within seven months, more than a thousand head of cattle had been stolen from the ranches in the High Rock country, and when Red Connors, from the 3 TL, stumbled onto the trail of the rustlers, he was shot and left to die. Luckily for Red, his old friend Hopalong Cassidy turned up in time to save his life. In pursuit of the outlaws, Hopalong tracked a stolen herd into High Rock Canyon, where it mysteriously disappeared without a trace. Then the night the rustlers attempted their biggest sweep of the range, he singlehandedly destroyed their clever scheme, although he himself was almost killed from ambush. Out for revenge, the remnants of the outlaw gang closed in on Hopalong and his friends, and blood flowed freely in the dusty streets of Tascotal as the silver-haired Texan showed with blazing guns why cattle rustling is not the most profitable or healthiest occupation in the West.
