Bekanntester Vertreter und Stammvater des Geschlechts war der in Diensten des Schwäbischen Bundes und der Stadt Augsburg stehende Feldhauptmann Sebastian Schertlin von Burtenbach (14961577), der 1532 die Herrschaft Burtenbach erwarb. Sebastians Sohn Johann Sebastian (15231596) erbte 1588 die Ortsherrschaft in den Dörfern Beihingen am Neckar, Geisingen am Neckar und Heutingsheim. Damit wurde er zum Stammvater eines Familienzweiges, der bis 1809 die Geschichte von Freiberg am Neckar wesentlich mitbestimmte. (Wikipedia).
