Towards the beginning Pickles explains: 'The six people that we have here tonight are two economists [Bareau and Dickinson], one journalist specialising in the economic aspects of defence questions [McLachlan], and three politicians [Chorley, Hailsham and Hughes], using politicians in the good sense of the term.' A spirited discussion fo the last budget by the Labour government before the general election later in the year, in which Chancellor of the Exchequer Hugh Gaitskell struggled to finance Britiain's involvement in the Korean War, controversially introducing prescription charges for Nationl Health glasses and dentures, and doubling purchase tax on a number of items.
