First Edition. Actually forming part of a larger work but complete on its own and usually found thus. The first part gives a history of the Natural History Museum in France, 1635-1853, with biographies and portraits of famous men associated with it, i.e. Tournefort, Buffon, Jussieu, Cuvier, &c., and details on the gathering and remitting of foreign specimens by explorers and colonials from Canada and elsewhere. There is a double-page plan of the garden of medicinal plants in 1636, and single page plans of the Jardin du Roi in 1640 and 1788. The second part gives a description of the museum in 1853, administration and budget, topography, botanical school, gardens, orchard, greenhouses, menagerie, mineralogy collection, and library. There is a double-page plan of the garden, and fifteen hand-coloured plates of flowers and birds. The plan of the labyrinths is wanting. Vicaire II pp. 42-43.

Condition: Good. _____Monochrome image, 4 x 5.5", mounted to an unprinted card, 4.25 x 6.5". _____ "The Empty Pillow" is at the top edge, the remainder of our title is at the bottom edge. _____ A satiric view of the recent death of Brigham Young which originally appeared in the English humor magazine Puck (Vol. 1, no. 26, Sept. 5, 1877, p. [16]). _____ In an inordinately wide bed, 12 women in night dress lie under the covers, with their faces buried in handkerchiefs._____ In the middle is a conspicuous empty space._____ On the head board above is a hat and mourning veil, on the floor at the foot of the bed are a pair of well worn boots. _____ In the original Puck image there appear a pair of "BY" monograms on wall hangings behind the bed._____ In the present image these have been replaced by inserted portraits of Brigham Young at two different ages. _____ ._____We found a single holding for this image, at the Utah State Historical Society (Photo Number No. 9393)._____ Their image is also included in the Wikipedia article on Brigham Young as of 20/02. _____ WorldCat (11/13) shows a single holding (BYU) for the single page from the Puck issue, crediting it to "J. Kapphan". _____ The Library of Congress hosts a digital image of an unsourced 1877 print._____ That holding was printed by Mayer, Merkel & Ottmann, Lith., 22-24 Church St, N.Y. and is signed in stone by "J. Keppler." . _____ There is neither artist nor publisher credit in either the UtHS or our image. _____.
