Hardcover with Slipcase. Richard Browne (illustrator). Celebrated as the best designed, illustrated adult book in the Australian Book Publishers Association Design Awards, The Skottowe Manuscript is a rare and valuable collector's piece. It is also a remarkable natural history of New South Wales. David Attenborough writes in his foreword that the book's beauty lies in its representation of '.a land full of marvels seen with wonder and innocence'. This is the first and only publication of The Skottowe Manuscript since its creation one hundred and seventy-five years ago. In 1813, Thomas Skottowe, an early colonial official, and convict artist Richard Browne compiled a remarkable record of the birds, animals, insects, reptiles, and fish of the New South Wales region, comprising 27 watercolours and 26 pages of hand-written copper-plate text. For each illustration in Volume I, Skottowe records his own excited comments and the native name for the subject, making The Skottowe Manuscript a delight to read as well as admire. To place the work in its historical context, author and historian Tim Bonyhady writes knowledgeably about the content of the manuscript in Volume II. Celebrated as the best designed, illustrated adult book in the Australian Book Publishers Association Design Awards, The Skottowe Manuscript is a rare and valuable collector's piece. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Maroon cloth with gold lettering on the spine. A couple rubbed spots on the front hinge, but otherwise clean and tight. Title page dated 1926. 227 pages. Illustrated with plates. This copy has a bookplate on the inside front cover from the personal collection of John Calaby, a noted Australian mammalogist. There is also an early inscription on the front endpaper, D R. J. Tallyard FRs from A & R. Robert John Tallyard was another leading light of Australian natural sciences. A nice association - and curious that Lovejoy did not add his name to this copy, considering that he wrote his name in almost everything he owned. This volume comes from the collection of Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, who was a passionate book collector as well as a renowned biologist. His collection recently came to auction near Washington DC, as we were fortunate to purchase a portion of it, which we're proud to offer here. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it's an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book (although they sometimes get right). Oversized and overweight books will require extra shipping for safe delivery. This copy does not have Lovejoy's name in it, but we provide a card with provenance for purchaser.
