Hardcover. Condition: Good. 5th or later Edition, Illustrated Editio. Juliana Horatia Ewing (1841 - 1885) was one of the most influential Victorian era writers of children?s books. Her best know works were "The Brownies" (1865 - this story inspired Lord Baden-Powell with a name for the most junior level of Girl Guides) ; "Mrs. Overtheway's Remembrances" (1869); "Jan of the Windmill" (1872 - Kipling claimed to know this story almost by heart); "A Flat Iron for a Farthing" (1873); "Six to Sixteen" (1875); "Jackanapes" (1884); and the book here offered, "Daddy Darwin's Dovecot" (1885). The book is illustrated by Randolph Caldecott, after whom The Caldecott Medal is named. The lovely frontispiece is in full, bright colors. The story revolves around a young boy of straightened circumstances, who, living in a rural setting, is helped by various people, including Daddy Darwin, in his efforts to improve his own circumstances. It's a charming story with very clear depictions of English country life. The color frontispiece and the various sepia drawings through the book; aside from the frontispiece, there are 17 images in all including six full page drawings and numerous chapter heading vignettes. Looking at the superb drawings supplied by Randolph Caldecott for this book (he had worked earlier with Ewing) one can understand why he was considered to be the grandfather of the modern illustrated children's book. There is no publication date in the book, but it was first published in 1884 by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. This is a later printing - likely, printed in 1888 (3 years after Ewing's death); we know it is a later printing, because of the advertisement for the Sixtieth Thousand copy of "Jakanapes" on the rear exterior (a prior printing has a lower number of copies for "Jackanapes" TITLE : Daddy Darwin?s Dovecot, a Country Tale AUTHOR : Juliana Horatia Ewing (1841 - 1885) ILLUSTRATIONS : Randolph Caldecott (1846 - 1886) IMPRINT : Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK) PLACE : London DATE : No date [ but circa 1888] EDITION : No edition stated - a Later Printing. STATUS : Stand-Alone Edition OP PHYSICAL DETAILS : Hardcover format; contains a color frontispiece and 17 sepia illustrations, six of which are full page and the rest vignette drawings placed throughout the text; the text is also printed in sepia; approximately 6" x 8 1/4"; pictorial paper-covered boards; the front cover has a drawing depicting an old man and two children releasing pigeons from a basket - both the picture and the lettering, which is integrated with the picture, are printed with black line and various shadings of red; the rear cover has an advertisement, along with positive testimonials from various periodicals, for Ewing's novel, "Jackanapes" (also illustrated by Caldecott) - this identified as the Sixtieth Thousand. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- Previously owned, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- Considerably toned (this a production effect, resulting from the paste used to affix the paper to the boards). Spine is weathered and displays abrasion, fraying and compression to the extremities; there are minute bookworm holes, and a touch of splitting at the joints; there is damp staining to the bottom edge of the front cover; the rear cover has damp staining along the fore-edge (partly with a bluish discoloration near the top); the cover, front and back, is considerably weathered. BINDING -- The binding remains fairly solid - no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR -- The paper is toned throughout (most particularly on the half-title (which is the recto of the frontispiece) and the last page (which darkening corresponds exactly to the inside of the rear cover). There are various small spots and smudges, bit nothing egregious. There is a small bookstore stamp at the bottom of the rear paste-down next to the hinge : COOK & ROBERTS , Booksellers & Stationers, 244 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, N.Y. Randolph Caldecott (illustrator).…
