Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 32p. Contemporary 1/2 leather with oriiginal wrappers bound in. 16 cm. as now bound. Top edge gilt on pages. Binding scuffed and somewhat worn wih front joint splitting a bit at top. Contents virtually as new. Bookplate of Henry Blackwell inside front cover on marbled endpaper.on mabled pastedown….Presumably printed by McCorquodale & Co., Ltd., London whose name appears on the last, otherwise blank, interior page. OCLC locates one copy (National Library of Wales). Henry Blackwell, of Welsh lineage, was a famous bookbinder (but not of this book) in New York. He was also a noted collector of Welsh books and of bookplates. The National Library of Wales dates their copy as 1914 and identifies the publisher as Woodall, Minshall, Thomas & Co. in Oswestry. We see nothing in this item about that publisher. Could there have been two editions of this little item? If so, were there changes in the text or in the group of advertizers on the last several pages.
[Railway; Oswestry; Llangynog] Manuscript two-part petition, signatures of numerous residents, addressed to M.P. Sir W.W. Wynn, in favour of the building of 'a Railway from the Town of Oswestry through Llansilin and Llanrhaiadr to Llangynog'.
[Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn, 6th Baronet (1820-1885), Conservative M.P. for Denbighshire from 1841 to 1885; Cambrian Railways; Oswestry and Newtown Railway; Oswestry, Ellesmere and Whitchurch Railway]

In two parts, each with the first page carrying the identically-worded petition. Part One: folio, 10 pp. Part Two: folio, 8 pp. Both texts clear and complete. On heavily aged and worn paper, with part of the blank last leaf of the second part torn away. The petition is by 'Freeholders and Ratepayers and others Residents [sic] in… the parishes of Llanrhaiadr Mochnant Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr Pennant Hirnant and Llangynog being respectively interested in the Trade of the District and its general Welfare': 'We are of opinion that no Arguments that we can urge are required to convince you of the importance and desirability of having a Railway for the district in question. Wherefore we leave to the Deputation which wait upon you in this matter to explain all sundry matters and details in relation to the scheme we are now endeavouring to promote.' Many of the large number of signatures are arranged under the names of towns and townships (i.e. 'Cefncoch Township', 'LLanarmon Mynydd Mawr' and 'Hirnant'). Two lines, both later absorbed by Cambrian Railways, give a clue to the dating of the petition: the Oswestry and Newtown Railway, opened in 1855, and the Oswestry, Ellesmere and Whitchurch Railway, opened in 1861.
