Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In this ground-breaking new text, Patrick Baert analyses the central perspectives in the philosophy of social science, critically investigating the work of Durkheim, Weber, Popper, critical realism, critical theory, and Rorty's neo pragmatism. Places key writers in their social and political contexts, helping to make their ideas meaningful to students. Shows how these authors views have practical uses in empirical research. Lively approach that makes complex ideas understandable to upper-level students, as well as having scholarly appeal. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This revised edition of Patrick Baert's widely acclaimed Social Theory in the Twentieth Century, now benefitting from the collaboration of Filipe Carreira da Silva has been brought right up-to-date with cutting-edge developments in social theory today. It offers an easy-to-read but provocative account of the development of social theory, covering a range of key figures and classic schools of thought. The authors bridge the gap between philosophy and social theory, locating the theoretical views of individuals such as Michel Foucault, Anthony Giddens and Jurgen Habermas within wider historical traditions. The revised edition includes new material on French pragmatist sociology and cultural sociology, and on contemporary social thinkers such as Zygmunt Bauman, Ulrich Beck, Manuel Castells, Randall Collins, Michael Mann, Saskia Sassen and Theda Skocpol. The authors conclude with a bold, new pragmatist agenda for social theory and the social sciences. Written in a lively style, and avoiding jargon, Social Theory in the Twentieth Century and Beyond is aimed at students who wish to gain an understanding of the main debates and dilemmas driving social theory. Like its predecessor, it will be a standard introduction to modern social theory for students in sociology, politics and anthropology. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Lecture; 17th, 1963) Appendix: books by, extant letters `These pious sentiments willhave served to introduce the obsessive theme of Dering's life, which must necessarily dominate any account of the man: the intense evangelical experience by a first-generation Protestant of justifi cation and union with Christ through the renunciation of `will-works' and of the world and the exercise of a lively faith; and the consuming desire to convey this experience to others.' (4) -- Christ's College at this time was a seed-bed of puritan religion, a society with a character of its own which was not exactly matched by any other college in either university, and which it owed to a remarkable succession of tutors. While St. John's was thrown into a turmoil in the sixties bythe determination of the authorities to impose the surplice andthe square cap and by the truculent nonconformity of a faction of the fellows, and while the heads of Christ Church and Mag- dalen at Oxford, Thomas Sampson and Laurence Humphrey, postured as national leaders inthe same anti-vestiarian cause,a quieter and yet more potent move ment was at work in Christ's. Here there grew a puritan tradition moderate in its reaction to those questions of ceremonies and church order which are usually represented as the main ground of the puritan protest, but passion- ately indignant against the practical inadequacies ofthe Elizabethan Church and above all against its pastoral deficiencies. It was a tradition estab- lished and begun, in all probability, by Dering himself.' (6f.) -- `At the outset I said that Dering wasthe archetypal puritan divine. By his early and affecting death, Dering became the first of the puritan saints.' (31) VG, stapled, in orig. azure wrapper. End leaves lightly foxed.
