Hardback. Condition: Good+. ~Previously unknown first edition. Rebound in c. 18th-century full tan calf, boards framed by double gilt fillets and decorated at corners in gilt with small tools. Gilt decor to board edges. Low raised bands and gilt decor and lettering, much rubbed, to spine. Fading to boards, some wear and marking to rear board. Wear to board edges. Spine worn, with chipping to base and small loss to top, and reinforced over outer hinges and inner front hinge with Japanese repair tissue. Rear hinge tender but holding. Pictorial seminary bookplate to inside front board ('Ex Bibliotheca Seminarii S Ioannis 1891', signed FAW), with minor library markings to prelims. Rear endpaper cracked at gutters. Rear endpapers have Dutch lion watermark (lion with sword and seven staves). Minor ink marking to title page. Title page and first 32ff. have much-faded red frames, outlining main section of t.p. and text and running titles in main text. Decorated initials. First edition of this scarce text, not recorded elsewhere online. This 1555 text differs from the 1556 edition (elsewhere incorrectly identified as the first edn) in the title, which ends 'dialogi' rather than 'dialogi quatuor', and the royal privilege. The 1556 edition has 'ex privilegio Regis ad decennium' to t.p.; this edn has 'ex privilegio Regis' to t.p. recto, with longer privilege text (also found on other Vascosan 1555 publications) to t.p. verso, recording the granting of a ten-year royal privilege on 7th February 1553. The 1556 edn has a dedication to Diane de Poitiers to verso of t.p., absent from this edition. The text block itself was clearly partly reset for the later 1556 edition: typesetting differs between the editions until sig. S3r. Bartolomeo Camerario (1497-1564), Italian jurist, nicknamed Bartolomeo Temerario ('Bartolomeo the reckless'). He taught law at the University of Naples between 1524 and 1526, and rose to occupy high office before, in 1548, being convicted of various crimes and fleeing to France, where he wrote theological-juridical works including this treatise on fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. In 1556 he returned to Rome, where Pope Paul IV appointed him commissary-general of the papal troops; in 1558 he was accused of embezzlement and arrested, spending two years in prison. He died at Naples in 1564. Michel de Vascosan (d. 1577), publisher, established his press in Paris in 1530 and was 'known for the unadorned elegance of his editions' (The Oxford Companion to the Book, 2010) - remarkably for the time, he left his title pages (as here) without decoration or emblem, the better to showcase his fine typography (he worked with Claude Garamond). The exceptional quality of his work was recognised by a general royal privilege granted to all his future works in 1554; the ten-year privilege in this edn is evidently an earlier version. Vascosan was the brother-in-law of Fà dà ric Morel and Robert Estienne and his workshop was part of a humanist circle including Guillaume Postel and a young Pierre de Ronsard. A very rare volume - the 1556 edition is itself scarce (7 copies on WorldCat), and this 1555 edition appears to be previously unknown. ~Robust packaging. Overseas tracking available on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. 1st edn. Hardback. Size: 164ff.

In-4 °, 44cc, half vellum binding, good condition, red and black title page with coat of arms of the dedicatee Paul IV. A famous Neapolitan lawyer, he also participated simultaneously in the cultural activity of the Neapolitan humanistic circle that gravitated around Alfonso Capece. And it was just after the government repression of this group of intellectuals (1540-42) that the first violent contrasts with Viceroy Pietro di Toledo broke out, as a non-marginal episode of the internal contradictions of the Neapolitan ruling class. Then Camerario sent a series of memorials in his defense to Charles V, without ever getting any response, eventually including the futility of his reintegration and rehabilitation efforts: abandoned the imperial territory, he took refuge in France (1547) immediately entering contact with the numerous anti-Spanish circles of the Neapolitan exiles and perhaps he also obtained a paid position as councilor of state at court. Camerario decided to move from Paris to Rome, placing himself under the anti-Spanish protection of Paul IV who, in consideration of his specific skills, after having appointed him general commissioner of the army for the war against Spain, entrusted him, together with the office of prefect, the administration of the State of the Church.
