Lisbon-printed tri-lingual dictionary of the Mbunda language as spoken in the west African country of Angola, together with translations into Portuguese and Latin. The compiler Friar Bernardo Maria de Cannecattim, an Italian Capuchin missionary from Palermo, was prefect of the missions to Angola and the Congo. His preface notes the work of the Capuchin order in Angola for more than twenty years, commenting on the necessity of communication in Mbunda for advancing the Roman Catholic faith amongst the Angolan population. He also makes reference to the political and mercantile utility of mastering the language. The establishment of Portuguese settlements in Angola began in the sixteenth century, driven by the development of the slave trade. Many slaves from Angola were shipped to Brazil to work on plantations. At the time of publication of this dictionary in 1804 the slave trade was still in operation, not being abolished until 1836. It appears that this is the first dictionary of the Mbunda language to have been printed. Cannecattim followed with a Mbunda grammar, Colleccao de observacoes grammaticaes sobre a lingua Bunda, ou Angolense (Lisbon, 1805). Impressao Regia was the first publishing house established in Brazil , then part of the Portuguese Empire. It was created in the city of Rio de Janeiro , as a result of the transfer of the Portuguese royal family to Brazil , by decree dated May 13, 1808, constituting itself as a branch of the Royal Printing Office existing in Lisbon since 1768. Its first publication was the Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro, the official organ of the court, also publishing the newspaper O Patriota, published between 1813 and 1814. After independence, it gave rise to the National Typography and, later, to the Brazilian National Press . Owned by Johannes Rahder, Dutch orientalist, Professor of Japanese at the University of Leiden (1931-1946) and Yale University (1947-1965). RAREE1804DXZZ - 08/21 RAREE1804HXZZ - 01/25 - HKREV389.

Inocêncio I, 381: «Fr. In quarto. 20x13.5 cm. ii, xx, 218 pp. 18th-19th Century full calf binding, gilt tools on spine; gilt tooled frames on boards. Contemporary decorative endpapers. Copy with stamped ex-Libris; library shelf labels; and blank ex-Libris - from OFM Quebec - on the title page. Gilt edges. Grammar of Bundo, Kimbundo, or Ki-Nbundo - the general language of Angola, or ancient kingdom of Ngola - which was the first to have the honour of being studied and translated by Europeans. This is the first edition of this magnificent and thorough work, pioneer in the study of Central African languages, which has been later reprinted by Imprensa Nacional de Lisboa in 1859. Contains a detailed study of grammar and also of the origin and affinity between the Bundo (or Kimbundu) and Conguesa (Congolese) languages. The work was written as a result of the success of the previously published dictionary. It is a grammar that, as far as we can see, and in the author?s own words is «a perfect grammar, and equal to any of the mainstream languages, and will always be a very great help in seeing through the obscurity of an unknown language» [see p. iii]. Nowadays, most part of Angola"s population are Bundos, just like at the time this grammar was published. Economic and political reasons of its publication are widely referred to by the author in the "Prologue to the Reader". Here the author establishes a geography of the languages in Angola. The geopolitical issue was that the Bundo people, got around the fact of being vassals of Queen Ginga by using the the Bundo Language, thus living as an independent and neutral people. However the Bunda language, according to the author, had all its purity in the Kingdom of Matamba owned by the Queen Ginga. The author establishes several etymological and linguistic observations, showing in one of them the existence of four declinations from a Latin point of view: adjectives, pronouns, verbs, conjugation, and the conjugation and tenses of verbs were more complex and more numerou.
