Add to basketCloth, large 4to, vii, 772 pp. Approximately 10,000 entries. Goldsmiths' Library has one of the world's finest collections of early works on economics. This is a single volume from the 5-volume Catalogue of the Library, and covers printed books published between 1801 and 1850. "The arrangement of the second volume of the catalogue follows that of the first, but there is one major change in the material to be found in it: British Parliamentary Papers, as printed for the two Houses of Parliament, have been excluded after the year 1801. However, notable Reports published by H.M. Stationery Office, by commercial firms or reprinted by societies are included. There is also a greater number of local, as distinct from private, Acts than was originally intended when the catalogue was planned. This is because it has been decided to include entries for the original printed texts of, for instance, early Railway Acts which were only published in an abbreviated form with the collections of Public General Acts."- from the preface. Near Fine.

Condition: Very Good. 2 volumes 4to (30.5 cm), front., XXIV, 838 pp; VII, 772 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jackets, top edges painted green (minor shelf-wear, dj of the volume 1 clipped). Volume I, Printed Books to 1800 (1970), compiled by Margaret Canney and David Knott, includes a historical introduction by J. H. P. Pafford and a foreword by D. T. Richnell; Volume II, Printed Books 1801-1850 (1975), compiled by Margaret Canney, David Knott, and Joan M. Gibbs. The catalogue records one of the finest collections of early economic literature in existence, the Goldsmiths' Library, formed by Professor H. S. Foxwell (1849-1936), purchased in 1901 by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths for £10,000, and presented in 1903 to the University of London, where it has since been housed. Comprising approximately 60,000 printed books and pamphlets, 400 manuscripts, and 350 autograph letters, the collection spans European and American economic thought, with particular strength in political science, social history, slavery, transport, temperance, trade unionism, and early socialist writing. The catalogue is arranged chronologically with broad subject divisions and includes notes on copies with notable provenance, among them books from the libraries of Adam Smith, John Locke, Jeremy Bentham, David Ricardo, David Hume, Karl Marx, and William Wordsworth. An indispensable reference for historians of economic thought, intellectual history, and the early book trade.

Add to basket2 vols, cloth, large 4to, xxii, 838 + vii, 772 pp. Approximately 20,000 entries. From the blurb: "The Goldsmiths' Library of Economic Literature consists of some 60,000 books and pamphlets, 400 manuscripts and 350 autograph letters, dating from the fifteenth century to the present day. The nucleus was formed by the economist H. S. Foxwell (1849-1936) and sold by him in 1901 to the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. In 1903, the collection was donated by the Goldsmiths to the University of London and has since been housed, maintained and developed in the University Library. Foxwell's collection, 'at first aimed at the provision of material for a thoroughly historical edition of the Wealth of Nations', gradually expanded into an authoritative library, with literature on: European and American economics; special collections on slavery, transport, temperance and city guilds and companies; and material by early socialist writers and about the history of trade unionism. " Offered here are the first two volumes from the 5-volume Catalogue of the Library, which covers printed books published up to 1850. Fine in slightly darkened, near Very Good dustwrappers.
