Cloth. Condition: VG. James Hannington (illustrator). Reprint. Story of Bishop James Hannington retold "to entertain and stimulate" young readers. Hannington went to Uganda as a Christian Missionary and was killed in 1885 at 38. There is a church named after him in Hove, England, near where he was born. Green covers with pink and light-green floral decoration and lettering to front and spine, 190pp with numerous b/w illustrations from Hannington's own African sketches. Dated 1917, 31st thousand. Foxing to early pages and edges. Spine weakening in places and one plate loose between pp118-119, strange round marks where something has been left in the book pp138-143, mild bumping to extremities and spine lettering fading, but still an attractive copy. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Undated, 'thirty eighth thousand' the only edition remarks. The boards show light wear to the corners, sunned spine and slight bumping to the spine edges, general light fading, bow to the front board. The front hinge is cracked beyond the end papers and there is one other gutter gap (photo 5), but the thick leaves are secure and tight. The pages are generally clean, with the odd faint to moderate foxing spot (more so to a few of the endmost pages). Moderate spotting to the text block edges, with a noticeable spot to the fore-edge and a little dirt rubbed to the bottom. Measures 19.9 x 13.2 x 4.0cm. 190 pages.

Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of dark green jacket and spine, corners slightly rubbed, some slight spotting to page fore edges, not price clipped (9s 6d), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 154pp. The book largely takes the form of a rustic dialogue in the manner of Thomas Love Peacock, though the main characters are spokesmen of Joad's own (weird!) tastes, prejudices, quirks, what not. One reads the chapters, almost forgetting the characters, in order to follow the lively discussions on the spoiling of the countryside, the Welfare State, English cooking, English politics, the delusions about progress, and the low contemporary British standards in writers and musicians. Cyril Edwin Mitchinson Joad (1891-1953), was a philosopher, weirdo (my description!), spiritualist, anti feminist, Labour candidate and broadcasting personality. He appeared on The Brains Trust, a BBC Radio wartime discussion programme, and popularised philosophy and became a celebrity, before his downfall in a scandal over an unpaid train fare in 1948. The author's last book, published posthumously.

Orange cloth covered boards with gilt-stamped lettering and graphic on front board panel, gilt-stamped lettering on spine. Upper external page edges are orange-tinted and foxed. Board panels are lightly soiled overall, more so on edges. Spine and outermost board edges are sunned. Lower edge of back board panel has a small rub through toward the tail of spine. Faint foxing to endpapers. Gutter is cracked title page. Internally clean. Board panels are a bit splayed. Dust jacket is sunned overall, more so on spine and extremities.
