Add to basketEngraved signature on the bottom left corner, Yours Sincerely, F.L. McClintock A mezzotint half length portrait of McClintock, image size 22.5x 28cm, over all, matted 40x 38cm, c.[16"x 2o"]. plus frame, a fine clean clear strike, tastefully framed.(). Among the many portraits of Arctic explorers of the period by Pearce the major…ity were this half size portrait, while four were the larger three quarter length with an Arctic scene in the background. McClintock portrait was done twice, the half portrait in 1856 and the larger in 1859. "It is clear that Pearse's portraits constitute a primary source of the greatest importance. The accuracy of his work is attested to by the contemporary naval biographer W.R. O'Bynre and they enable a clear impression to be gained of the personalities being dealt with. . Pearce's achievement was that he put the flesh upon the bones of the subject, and for that his works have placed polar historians in his debt". I.R. Stone, Polar Record, 1988. Between 1851 and 1877, Stephen Pearce (1819-104), painted, among other subjects, portraits of most of the distinguished 19th century British Arctic explorers. The Arctic Council discussing a plan of search for John Franklin is his most famous painting. The National Portrait Gallery catalogues 25 Arctic Portraits.
