Add to basketCloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Gordon Browne (illustrator). 1st Edition. A very good copy of the 1st edition in the original wrap with colour frontispiece and 6 further black and white plates by Gordon Browne. The binding has bright clean boards and a more darkened spine. The front board is slightly bowed and has a bump to the bottom corner. The back board has a bump to the top corner and the bottom corner is turned inwards. The spine has rubbing down the joints and pulled ends. All page edges are greened. There is a loose publisher's flyer inside advertising new titles for 1911, including Tom Stapleton, the Boy Scout. There is a presentation inscription on the verso of the front free endpaper for perfect church attendance between 1912 and 1916. The contents are complete with half title (book listing to verso), colour frontispiece, title, dedication to Baden-Powell, contents and illustrations listings, note from Baden-Powell, text pp 11-287 with 6 plates. The contents are clean with some toning towards the page edges - particularly the top edge. The half title is browned. There is occasional spotting - mostly in the margins. There is an old top corner crease to p 215/6. The scarce dust jacket is blue with black titles and a picture of a boy scout in blue and orangey-brown and a panel showing Baden-Powell's commendation of the work on the front panel. The spine has black titles and a picture of a boy scout. The flaps and back panel are plain. There is creasing around the folds which are browned. There is old tearing to the spine at both top and bottom with some loss - mostly at the top - and some old repair with clear tape visible internally. There is general wear and nibbling at the fold ends and the edges are browned. It is in a removable protective wrap. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.

(1), 51pp printed on semi-absorbent George V Stationery Office watermarked paper + 12 full-page maps. Covers good with loss to spine, interiors good, tanned and spotted. An extremely rare in-house report apparently published in installments of which this is the first. Not recorded on Worldcat or Library Hub. Library Hub locates Cave-Browne-Cave's ms "Diary from the RAF Far East Flight 1927-1928" (National Aerospace Library presented by fellow expedition member GE Livock). He reached a wider public with the article "The cruise of the Royal Air Force Far East flight" (Journal of the Royal Aeronautical Society, 1929). Building on successes proving routes to Egypt and South Africa in 1926, the RAF established the Far East Flight to explore routes, facilities, and practicalities in flying to the farthest eastern reaches of Empire independent of surface vessels and shore bases. The unit consisted of 4 new Supermarine Southampton II flying boats fitted out for living aboard among other modifications. The unit was led by Group Captain Henry Cave-Browne-Cave aboard S-1149, with Squadron Leader GE Livock 2nd-in-command (S-1150), and Flight Lieutenants DV Carnegie (S-1151) and CG Wigglesworth (S-1152). They conducted the Flight in 4 Sections: 1. Felixstowe - Karachi (14 Oct - 18 Nov 1927); 2. Karachi - Singapore (18 Dec - 28 Feb 1928); 3. Singapore - Australia - Singapore (21 May - 15 Sep 1928); and 4. Singapore - Hong Kong - Singapore (1 Nov - 11 Dec 1928). Upon completion, the unit remained at Seletar in Singapore as 205 Squadron under Cave-Browne-Cave. This self-contained report covers Section 1. Dated April 1928, CBC thus prepared it between Sections 2 and 3. He credits the British, French and Italian air forces and attaches, local authorities, British Consuls and other reps, noting much interest shown along the way. They left Felixstowe in rain and thick mist. Some highlights: Strong headwinds from Alexandretta to Baghdad forced a refuelling and overnight stop at Ramadi. An appreciative King Faisal here named "Ali" was flown over Baghdad. CBC visited the Palace and Prime Minister the next day. All personnel were inoculated for cholera at Hinaidi due to an outbreak. Basra's mooring provoked "great objection" due to "native boat traffic which passes constantly day and night and if there is no wind completely out of control", prompting a nighttime guard and "many native craft had to be towed clear". The Flight found Gurmat Ali a suitable base. In the Gulf they avoided landing in Persia due to the quarantine. Instead, Acting Consul and Squadron Leader Keith coordinated fuel, medical and other help from aboard his Presidency Launch the "Percy Cox". This was supplied by HMS Enterprise and Triad off Bushire and Henjam Island, the latter boasting a Royal Navy golf course, cricket ground, tennis court, officers club and canteen. They diverted slightly over Oman to locate potential bases in Khasab and other bays, but the area was too open, mountainous and desolate. At Gwadar (then ruled by Oman) help came from Flying Officer Simpson from Karachi, and the Sultan of Muscat's representative and other notables visited. The Political Officer for Makran travelled down to greet them: "In order to relieve him from another long journey by camel and car back to his district, he was offered and accepted a passage to Karachi" with Political Officer Captain Smith. Karachi's moorings proved vulnerable to local traffic. APPENDICES contain daily diary (progress, people met, times, speeds, sleeping arrangements etc), statistics, harbour facilities, meteorology, equipment, navigation, finance, stores, living conditions in flying boats, and their modifications. MAPS (linked to Stats with cautions and supporting information): Hourtin, Berre, Nisida, Brindisi, Phaleron, Abukir, Alexandretta, Hinaidi, Magil (Basra), Bushire, Henjam Sound, Gwadar Bay.
